Hybrid cars are one of the more recent and most practical innovations1in the fight against greenhouse gases and global warming. Electric cars would of course be the ultimate2in reducing emissions3, but the attempts to produce a workable electric car have not yet produced anything that would be useable and practical to the average driver.

Electric cars are very good if you do not want to travel faster than 40-50 mph or go more than 100 miles before recharging4your batteries for several hours. Many of us would still like to make a contribution to the environment without influencing our daily life, and hybrid cars are a great way to make a start towards this goal.

One direct and immediate benefit of driving a hybrid car is the reduction in your fuel bill. You can cut your fuel bill by anywhere between 25 and 50 per cent. This has recently become more and more important with the increasing cost of gas. A typical car driving around town will have fuel economy figures （省油量） of less than 25 miles per gallon. For a hybrid car, you should find it relatively easy to achieve figures in excess of 55 mpg, with even large SUVs getting a figure of 30-40 mpg.

One of the arguments against hybrid cars, as well as one of the reasons why many people don't want to make the change, is the price. Hybrid cars are more expensive to buy than conventional cars due to the fact that they have an electric motor as well as a petrol engine.

Hybrid cars may soon be not only good for the environment, but also good for your wallet. And hopefully, in the near future, hybrid cars may be — with their falling prices and ever-increasing fuel efficiency — a really cheaper and cleaner alternative for financially and environmentally-conscious drivers.
