Do you put much thought into the strategy behind the font you use on your resume?

Do you think about the font youre going to use before writing your resume? Do you put any consideration into which font would be the best choice for your career documents?

How about the size of the margins you use, whether to infuse color into the documents, or how to plan the layout of your resume?

If you dont, you shouldbecause the aesthetic elements of a resume matter more than you might think. They are the first impression the hiring manager has of you (much like what you wear to an interview and whether you show up early or late). Every element of your resume needs to he a strategy. If youre an executive, then you wouldnt use ic Sans; but if youre an edgy graphic designer trying to convey a certain image, you might.

My point is this: your resumes visual elements are important toonot just the words you use. So be strategic in your choices. If youre not sure which font, design, margins and colors are appropriate for your career level and job search goals, try doing some online research. Or if that isnt your forte, then consider hiring a professional resume writer who works with you to personally assist in the development of a resume strategy that will get results.

Of course, a resume is much more than visual aesthetics and an appealing design. But its important to understand that the overall layout and design of your resume will be the hiring managers first impression. And as first impressions goit had better be a good one!

Turn down the drink! When arriving for an interview, or when the interviewer is walking you back to their office, its very mon that someone might offer you a something to drink; a glass of water, coffee, or pop. Be professional, yet natural! Often, people either sit too relaxed, or too stiff. Sliding down in your chair and crossing your legs with one knee over the other, may be appropriate, or it may seem lazy and overly casual. Depending on how far you slouch and the interviewers subjective opinion. Brevity is a virtue! While you definitely dont want to give one-word answers to their questions, or answers that are so short they are always looking for more you definitely dont want to give answers that are far too long. Usually people do it because they arent sufficiently prepared for the questions being asked, so they ramble on until they think theyve covered every aspect of it. Preparation by writing out answers to monly asked questions and practicing them at home will help you give succinct and effective answers in the interview. Dont try their patience by being too long-winded!
