In today's economy new opportunities aren't as plentiful as they've been in the past, leing many employees to sit it out and hope for the best from their current employers.

在如今的经济情况下,新的工作机会没有过去那么多,如此一来很多员工都只能坐等机会,希望从当前雇主那里获得最好的待遇。

That's a dangerous strategy to follow. Witness these headlines marking the worsening job market:

To oid being laid off and hing to start all over, consider seeking a lateral move or even a job promotion within your current pany. It's easier than you think.

为了不被开除,一切要从新开始,考虑在公司内部的横向发展或升迁。这比你想象中要简单。

Because internal promotions and lateral moves involve individuals that are already known entities, the key is to e prepared with proof of past job performance and answers to any objections that might be made. This process of rating one's worth in terms of the pany's bottom line should begin the very first day on a new job and continue until a promotion is offered or a lateral move requested.

因为内部晋升和横向发展涉及到的都是你已经了解的内容,关键是要准备好能够证明过去优秀表现的材料以及想好怎样应对可能会出现的反对。就公司的基本来说,对一个人价值的评估过程应该是从他来上班的第一天开始,并一直进行到提升他,或他本人要求横向调动的那一天。

Of course, most of us don't operate that way, and even if you're getting into the game late, you can still do the following to promote your cause.

1. Make detailed records of your job performance to justify a promotion.

将你的业绩表现做出详细记录,以证明你值得晋升

No matter how fair an employer tries to be, they don't he the same vested interest as you in personal career progression. What's more, they he many staff to consider, while your focus is understandably personal in nature.

不管一名雇主想要表现得多公平,他们在你的个人职业发展上与你的想法也不会相同。而且,他们要考虑很多员工,而你关注的当然只是你本人。

Therefore, don't assume that an employer will recall the good you've done for the pany. Make detailed records of past projects, ideas, and successes in which you were directly involved. Quantify all acplishments with dollar figures or percentages and time periods. Specify what you've done to improve work performance, whether that involves continuing education or learning a new technology.

因此,不要妄想一位雇主会想起你为公司做过些什么。将过去你直接参与过的项目,新创意以及成功做出详细的记录。将你每个时期的成就用美元或百分比量化出来。重点突出你曾做过哪些改善来提高工作成就,无论是再教育或是学习一门新的技术。
