助产士的技术水平和操作能力关系着母婴的安危，其工作性质决定了助产士需要集产科临床和护理的知识技术于一身，因此，能够从事的工作种类也比较多，可以在各级医疗单位、医学教育和科研单位从事相关工作。具体包括为妇女提供妊娠、分娩期间及产后所需的照顾；独立地执行正常产妇的接产工作，照顾出生婴儿及幼儿；以专业人士的角色参与处理妊娠、分娩及产褥期中复杂、异常的情况；向妇女、家庭、社区提供健康辅导及教育等。
