"Wecelebratethepast.WehehonoredAmerica'sremarkableachievements,strugglesandtriumphsinthe20thcentury.Wecelebratethefuture,imagininganevenmoreremarkable21stcentury.

"Aswemarvelatthechangesofth

elast100years,wedreamofwhatchangesthenext100andthenext1,000willbring.Andaspowerfulasourmemoriesare,ourdreamsmustbeevenstronger.Forwhenourmemoriesoutweighourdreams,webeeold.AnditistheeternaldestinyofAmericatoremainforeveryoung-alwaysreachingbeyond,alwaysbeing,asourFounderspledged,``amoreperfectunion.''

"Ifthestoryofthe20thcenturyisthetriumphoffreedom,whatwillthestoryofthe21stcenturybe?

"Letitbethetriumphoffreedomwiselyusedtobringpeacetoaworldinwhichwehonorourdifferencesandevenmoreourmonhumanity.Suchatriumphwillrequiregreateffortsfromusall.

"Itwillrequireustostandagaittheforcesofhatredandbigotry,terroranddestruction.Itwillrequireustocontinuetoproer,toalleviatepoverty,tobetterbalancethedemandsofworkandfamilyandtoserve,eachofus,inourmunities.

"Itwillrequireustotakebettercareofourenvironment.Itwillrequireustomakefurtherbreakthroughsinscienceandtechnology,tocuredreaddiseases,healbrokenbodies,lengthenlifeandunlocksecretsfromglobalwarmingtotheblackholesintheuniverse.
