Transport is the number two cost after housing for most households in rich countries. Traffic safety is everybody's business. Records show that every year a lot of people die in traffic accidents. Some of the accidents are due to mechanical problems.

However, most of them are the results of careless and reckless driving, and could be avoided. A lot of people disregard traffic signals and rules. They drive regardless of speed limits, run through red lights, drive in the wrong direction, talk and laugh while driving, and turn as they wish without giving signals. They don't slow down while approaching crossroads. So many people violate traffic regulations that we cannot put too much emphasis on the importance of traffic safety.

Only when everybody thinks traffic safety is everybody's business can we be safe driving on roads and walking on sidewalks.

With the development of industry and economy, more people from rural area are pouring into big cities and more vehicles are going on to the street. As a result, many cities are faced with the serious problem of traffic congestion, which has become one of the major concerns of the society.

To solve this problem, many people have put forward many solutions, of which the following two are the most typical. One is to lay down more roads, which will make the highways less crowded and accelerate the flowof traffic. Another is to open up more bus routes, which will enable more people to take buses rather than ride bikes or drive cars, thus decreasing the number of cars and bikes racing on the streets.

However, both of the suggestions have disadvantages. The former may occupy too much land, which may be otherwise put to better uses. The latter, on the other hand, will bring inconvenience to those who are living far away from the bus routes. The best solution, in my opinion, seems to be the combination of the two: toay down more roads in spacious areas and to open up more bus routes in downtown areas.
