I think this is very situational, by that I mean you will need to observe very carefully your surroundings during an earthquake. However, the very first thing you need to do is to be calm. Being calm will help a lot with your observation and decision making.

In situations, where you are unable to run out to a safe and open clear area then it would be better to stay indoors. Get into your room and stay under a table or overturn your divan mattress (thick) over you. Also, make sure you are close to a wall if possible close to a strong point (like a beam) This is to prevent any big heavy debris from knocking you when it falls.

If you have time grab some essentials like torchlight, water, broom stick or long stick, wet towel to wrap round your mouth and nose to help you breathe better, soup pot to protect your head and make noise if you are buried. Mobile phones may not be of help as communication network would be destroyed during the quake. But if you have it, switch it off during the initial period to conserve battery life and occasionally switch it on to see if the network has been restored to enable you to call for help.

After the initial quake, if you are able to run then be very careful where you run, because there will be intermittent quakes, building collapsing and landslides. If your place is clear and open then stay till help arrives.

If you are buried then check if you are alright and if there is space for you to move. If you can see light then, use the stick and push it out (attach a piece of cloth from your clothing/ handkerchief at the end), this is to help attract attention and the dogs from the rescue teams.

At all times remain calm and slow down your breathing. Rest as much as you can to conserve energy.
