商务英语是以适应职场生活的语言要求为目的，内容涉及到商务活动的各个方面。商务英语课程不只是简单的对学员的英文水平、能力的提高，它更多的是对学员传授一种西方的企业管理理念、工作心理，甚至是如何与外国人打交道，如何让和他们合作、工作的方式方法，以及他们的生活习惯等，从某种程度上说是包含在文化概念里的。

高职高专商务英语专业首先是英语专业，要坚持以英语为本的原则，培养的人才必须具有较宽的英语基础和人文知识基础，具有扎实的英语听、说、读、写、译的基本功，在基础语言知识和技能训练中，应侧重培养学生的实用能力和应用英语能力。其次，高职高专的英语教学又有一定的专门用途英语ESP(English for Special Purpose)范畴内的职业用途英语EOP(English for Occupational Purpose)教学特点，教学更倾向语言功能和语言活动，其目的在于使学习者获得与其社会目的相关的“终端行为”。再次，高职高专商务英语专业又是跨学科的复合型专业，该专业培养的人才既要有具有扎实的英语基础，又必须掌握宽泛的商贸专业知识。高职商务英语专业在商务知识上要求不太深，以够用为度。突出在商务情景下商务英语的运用能力的培养，这样才能突出职业教育的特点。
