国家通用英语考试就是全国英语等级考试. PETS，全国公共英语等级考试，自从推出以来日益受到考生们的重视。由于PETS考试是由国家教委主考并颁发证书的全国性考试，现在无论是找工作还是求学，有PETS证书是一大优势，很多考生正是看中了该考试的权威性和实用性而决定参加PETS考试. PETS考试是分为五级的，其中PETS一级中还有一个附属考试PETS1B，所以实际上是六个考试，很显然每次同时开考这六个考试难度是很大的，因此PETS的报名时间和考试时间分为春季考试和秋季考试两次，而PETS1-4级考试每年只有一次考试机会，而PETS5则有两次考试. PETS1是初始级，其考试要求略高于初中毕业生的英语水平。（PETS1B是PETS1的附属级）；PETS2是中下级，其考试要求相当于普通高中优秀毕业生的英语水平。PETS3是中间级，其考试要求相当于我国学生高中毕业后在大专院校又学了2年英语或自学了同等程度英语课程的水平。PETS4是中上级，其考试要求相当于我国学生高中毕业后在大学至少又学习了3-4年的英语或自学了同等程度英语课程的水平。PETS5是最高级，其考试要求相当于我国大学英语专业二年级结束时的水平。
