导游词是一种比较特殊的文本。它是通过外语导游员（以下称导游员） 之口直接说给外国旅游者（以下称旅游者） 听的。导游词大量产生于中国改革开放后入境旅游（inbound tourism） 蓬勃兴起之际。其形式之丰富多彩，内容之精彩纷呈，描述手段之变幻莫测，在很大程度上是不同于一般的旅游资料或见闻的。译成英语的导游词通常是供导游员在途中、景点、娱乐场所、商店或餐厅时进行口头讲解服务用的，故又不同于即兴发挥的“现场导游”（on2the2spot int roduction） 和“途中导游”（on2the2way int roduction） 。前者是可以“预制的”（pre2t ranslated） ，后者则需现编词（排除事先准备等因素） 。尽管前者可以预制，但它又不同于一般的笔译（包括旅游资料或见闻的翻译） 。因为旅游业是为旅游者服务的，根据旅游者的要求和期望，好的导游词应包括informative （内容充实） 、int riguing （生动有趣） 、realistic （真实可信） 、practical （实用性强） 、cultural （文化性强）
