请不要这么说编剧，编剧这么做是忠实的服从了原著，因为原著小说就是这么设定的。而且，这么设定是有充分依据的：
首先，宇航员Watney想到废弃的火星车上有摄像头并且可以向地球发送照片，这就让与地球通讯成为可能；
当然，他可以向题主说的那样用在白板上写字的方式向外传递信息（实际上他后来就是这么干的，题主看电影貌似不怎么用心），但是他需要的是交流，这么做解决不了nasa那边怎么给他传递信息的问题，nasa那边唯一能做到就是转动摄像头，拍照。。。
于是，Watney想到了把摄像头当成笔，指示字母然后组合成句子的方法进行交流。不用26位字母直接表示是因为这样一来每个字母分到的角度太小，不利于相机取景拍照。用16进制的话，两位16进制数字就可以表示0到255的组合，转换成ASCII码就可以表示所有字母了；
接着，跟地球取得联系后，Watney也采用了自己这边在白板上写字，nasa那边继续转摄像头的方法进行交流，再后来nasa那边更新了火星车的系统，Watney把这个系统刷到了mav还是hub不记得是哪个仓的电脑上了，于是乎，通讯问题解决。
原著小说在科学细节上的挑剔与严谨比之一般科幻片要严肃得多。建议题主有时间的话看下小说，比电影还要精彩。
